21/01/14

The activity of the Army bomb squads, called to intervene in Genoa, in via Bolzaneto, for a small arsenal found in a stairwell during renovation works, has ended. The cavity hid 5 grenades, 1 incendiary bomb, 2 anti-personnel mines, 1 carbine winchester and 1 miter thompson, 1 silencer, 11 tanks, 2 cartridge holders and about 1600 cartridges.

Now residents, 8 families evacuated last night, can return to their homes.

The reclamation intervention, urgently requested by the Prefecture of Genoa, was carried out by the bomb technicians of the 32 ° genius regiment of the Taurinense Alpine Brigade. The material was subsequently removed and transported to a quarry in Né (GE) where it was destroyed.

The Army specialists belonging to the 32nd genius are organized in emergency teams called 'EOD' (English acronym for Explosive Ordnance Disposal, i.e. explosive ordnance reclamation) and have the competence for this type of intervention throughout the northwestern territory . They have a long experience in the sector gained also thanks to the operational missions carried out abroad and in particular in Afghanistan.

The 32 ° sapper engineers regiment is the resource dedicated to mobility, against mobility, deployment and combat support of the Taurinense Alpine Brigade. In addition to operational tasks, like the other regiments of the Army engineers, it intervenes, when required, in activities to support the population in the event of natural disasters. The regiment is one of the 12 units from the Corps of Engineers who have the exclusive task of reclaiming the national territory from the numerous still existing and dangerous remnants of war.

Each genius regiment has jurisdiction over a part of the national territory and, in the year just ended, more than 2000 specialized interventions were carried out for the clearance of ordnance throughout the peninsula. In the last 10 years the interventions have been over 30000.

The Armed Force, thanks to the "dual-use" capability of its engineering departments, in addition to operational use in international missions, is able to intervene in cases of public disasters and usefulness, at any time, throughout the Italian territory in support of the national community as recently occurred during the bad weather emergency in Sardinia and in these last hours in Emilia.
