The Army's bomb disposal experts, from the railway engineering regiment of Castel Maggiore (BO), have completed the disarming operations of a war device found in the port area of Ancona.
The device, an American-made aerial bomb with a total weight of approximately 240 kg and 128 kg of TNT, dating back to the Second World War, was found partially exploded and in very poor condition.
The clean-up operations, coordinated by the prefecture of Ancona, on the basis of the technical indications of the command of North Operating Forces of the Army of Padua, saw specialized personnel of the Army and the Navy at work, synergistically, in perfect compliance with both the operational procedures foreseen for emergencies and the civil protection system.
The activities, constantly monitored and coordinated by the rescue coordination center convened at the Prefecture of Ancona, attended by representatives of the institutional and technical components involved, took place in three distinct phases during which the Army engineers, with the CMD (Conventional Munition Disposal) unit, in the days preceding the intervention, created a temporary protection structure at the site where the device was found, to mitigate the effects due to a possible accidental explosion and subsequently proceeded to neutralize the device by removing the trigger systems.
Finally, the aerial bomb was transported to sea and detonated by the divers of the GOS (Underwater Operations Group) of the COMSUBIN (Underwater and Raiders Command) of the Navy, detached to the SDAI (Mine Defense and Mine Removal Unit) of Ancona in order to protect public safety.
The police headquarters, with the assistance of other police forces and the local police, ensured adequate security during the operations to remove the detonation system, also ensuring traffic was closed on some roads adjacent to the area where the device was found.
The Municipality of Ancona has also assisted some evacuated citizens who resided in the so-called red area. The operations of reclamation of war remnants are part of the tasks assigned to the Armed Forces, always at the service of the Country, for the protection of public safety.
