The cycle of sanitization of mountain refuges and bivouacs in the Abruzzo Apennines requested by the Park Authority of the Gran Sasso Italiano to command the Alpine troops of the Army began from the 2.433 meters of the “Franchetti” refuge. Among the structures covered by the program, sanitation will also concern the "Bafile" bivouac (2669 m.), The "Duca degli Abruzzi" refuge (2.388 m.) And the "Garibaldi" (2.231 m.), The oldest refuge in the 'Italy.

The work of the Army will allow these structures of tourist interest to be made accessible to the population again after the long period of closure to the public. It also forms part of a wider articulated activity of reconditioning paths, sanitizing refuges and bivouacs and conducting surveys on paths and via ferratas, carried out in support of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) and in collaboration with the Civil Protection of the National Alpine Association (ANA).

A reclamation unit of the "Vicenza" battalion, accompanied by Meteomont personnel from the 9th Alpine regiment, has recently reached the "Franchetti" refuge to sanitize the structure, which is managed by the Gran Sasso e Monti Park Authority of the Laga. This type of intervention, for which the Army has specific skills and which is currently underway in various structures throughout the national territory, falls within the so-called preventive medicine and environmental hygiene.

At the same time as the sanitization activities, the "Nono" Alpine troops also restored the path that leads from Prati di Tivo to one of the most beautiful places in the Gran Sasso, under the majestic face of the Corno Grande. The collaboration between the Army, CAI and ANA will allow the use of military personnel in the territories of the Alpine and Apennine arches to restore the safety conditions of paths and via ferratas in favor of mountain communities and for many mountain enthusiasts.
