Found war residual in Regalbuto

12/05/14

In the municipality of Regalbuto (EN) an unexploded ordnance dating back to the Second World War was found.

The residue was found inside a farmyard in the district of Campolungo, and was identified by the Italian army specialists as an 88 mm artillery projectile of English nationality, loaded with high potential explosives (HE ).

On the spot a specialized team of the 4 ° Palermo sappers regiment intervened under the command of the Aosta brigade; these teams are called EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) nuclei most commonly referred to as bomb squads.

Due to the poor state of conservation it was not possible to carry out the disarming of the device, which was then safely transported to the Piano Arena district where the specialists of the 4 regiment destroyed it.

The technical skills of the personnel and the means provided to the army guarantee the precious intervention in case of public utility and for the protection of the environment. In particular, the engineering departments, thanks to the experience gained in foreign missions and the high "dual-use" connotation (ability to cooperate with civil authorities in favor of citizenship and the operational one expressed in operational theaters), operate in favor of the national both in the event of public disasters and for the remediation of war remnants still widely present in Italy.

From 2000 to 2013, the EOD cores of the army's engineering departments performed over 37.000 specialist interventions for the clearance of explosive devices. In 2014 the army specialists of the 4th Engineers Regiment of Palermo have already completed 26 reclamation interventions in the Sicilian territory, with the relative disarming or destruction of the devices found. The army is the only armed force responsible for training of the bomb squads of all the police forces, armed forces and armed bodies of the state.
