02/11/21

Today, in the presence of the army logistic commander, general of the army corps Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, the alternation of the director of the "Celio" Military Polyclinic of Rome between the lieutenant general Giacomo Mammana, transferor, and the brigadier general Carlo Catalano, taking over.

Present at the event, which took place at the "Attilio Friggeri" barracks, headquarters of the Military Polyclinic of Rome, were the Undersecretary of State for Defense, the Honorable Giorgio Mulé, and the Medal Holder of the National Association of Military Health.

During his speech, General Figliuolo thanked General Mammana for the fruitful work carried out during his mandate as director of the Celio, which began in March 2020, when in the very early stages of the health emergency, the Military Polyclinic was called , by the will of the Minister of Defense, to contribute with all available energy to support the National Health Service, in very complex and difficult situations.

In this context, the response to the Covid-19 emergency, which took place quickly and effectively, was a clear testimony of the all-round level of efficiency of the Military Polyclinic within the Country System: from reconversion, in just 21 days , of the Celio in the Covid hospital equipped with 150 beds (of which 50 can be modulated between intensive and subintensive care), as a "spoke" for the IRCCS "Spallanzani" for the treatment of over 1.000 symptomatic patients suffering from Sars-Cov-2, to the strengthening of the Scientific Department of the Military Polyclinic which made it possible to process up to 3.000 swabs per day, coming from fixed sampling points and mobile units in Italy and abroad.

Furthermore, the medical staff of the Military Polyclinic was promptly employed in multiple activities in competition with the regional health systems in favor of the civilian population: from the hospitals in Lombardy, the epicenter of the first pandemic wave, to the various military field hospitals in Piacenza, Perugia, Aosta and Cosenza; from Defense Drive Throughs (Operation “IGEA”) and Defense Vaccination Aids (Operation “EOS”) to the mobile defense teams with the task of supporting the vaccination campaign especially in those locations that are more difficult to reach.

Last but not least, the consolidation of the collaboration and convention relationships with the main research, hospitalization and treatment institutes, the creation of the center specialized in post-Covid psychophysical recovery and the strengthening of the Defense Veterans Center, a reference point for assistance to personnel who have sustained major injuries in the performance of their duties.

The logistic commander of the Army then addressed his wishes for the new post to the Catalan general who, thanks to the great experience gained in the position of hospital director, will certainly be able to further increase the action of the Military Polyclinic so that he can express the maximum level of health support in all operational and emergency contexts.

The "Celio" Military Polyclinic of Rome, framed in the logistic command of the Army, is the hospital center of excellence of the entire Military Health sector, able to ensure health care for the personnel of the Armed Forces serving in the homeland and in contingents abroad.
