Bad weather: the Army continues to operate in Veneto and Lazio

The prefecture of Modena, in light of the improved meteorological conditions, announced that, starting today, it will be possible to proceed to the complete withdrawal of the army's personnel and vehicles deployed in the municipality of Bomporto.

The Army had intervened in the province of Modena from the first hours of the emergency of last January 19 to carry out fortification works on the embankments and at the same time to transport the displaced citizens to the structures set up for the occasion, also making use of the water vessels of the Departments of genius.

On the other hand, the intervention of the Army in Veneto and in Lazio continues, in the municipalities hit by the exceptional wave of bad weather.

In Veneto the military intervened at the request of the prefects of Belluno and Treviso. In the Belluno area there are about 140 men who, with 41 vehicles including BV-206 tracked vehicles and earth-moving machines, are working to restore the road network and clear the large amount of snow in the municipalities of Cencenighe Agordino, Santo Stefano di Cadore, Pieve di Cadore , Falcade, Valle di Cadore, Arabba, Borca di Cadore, Rocca Pietore, Forno di Zoldo, San Pietro di Cadore, San Vito di Cadore, Sappada and Cortina d'Ampezzo. In Cortina, in particular, there are also Army rock climbers involved in the roofing operation which aims to remove the over two meters of accumulated snow from the roofs of public buildings as soon as possible.

This morning, during the removal of the snow in front of the church of Cortina on the recommendation of the Franciscan friar, the Alpine troops freed access to the home of a disabled lady. The Army personnel, having ascertained the real possibility of failure of the beams of a roof of the house, rescued a disabled lady on her shoulder who was suitably put on a white cross ambulance and transported to the hospital for the necessary treatments. In the meantime, firefighters have also been called to secure the aforementioned house.

In the Treviso area, over 175 men, special engineering vehicles and dewatering pumps, for a total of 35 Army vehicles, are still engaged in monitoring and strengthening the embankments, draining water and removing debris, in the municipalities of Motta di Livenza , Meduna di Livenza and Preganziol. 

In Lazio, at the request of the mayor of Fiumicino, the Prefect authorized an extension of the army's employment in the area until 19 pm tomorrow. The Army is present, in collaboration with the local authorities, in the municipality of Fiumicino with 140 men, special engineering vehicles and dewatering pumps, for a total of 38 vehicles. In Fiumicino there is also a medical unit consisting of a medical officer and a nurse with the task of providing basic health care, collecting the health needs of the population, providing, thanks to the support of the municipal pharmacy, the necessary medicines and providing to provide oxygen therapy to bedridden patients. 

Army men and vehicles will continue to operate in support of the population, based on the requests made by the Prefectures.
