(To Army Majority State)
19/10/21

The bomb squads of the Army, at the request of the prefecture of Ragusa, intervened in the Cifali district, in the territory of the municipality of Chiaramonte Gulfi (RG), to reclaim a 250-pound aircraft bomb, dating back to the last world war.

The operations coordinated by the prefecture in synergy with the Army, provided for the evacuation of the civilian population for a radius of 350 meters from the expansion chamber built by the military, to secure the military device, also providing for the temporary closure of the "Pio La Torre" airport of Comiso.

The Eod (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) specialists of the 4th genius regiment of the “Aosta” brigade have provided, due to the poor state of conservation of the bomb, to neutralize it on the spot and then transport it to the quarry for final destruction. In order to act according to the required safety standards, they applied the procedures for reducing risk conditions by operating remotely with robotic systems.

Since the beginning of 2021, the sappers of the 4th Engineer Regiment of Palermo, commanded by Colonel Mario Rea, have already carried out 57 interventions throughout the Sicilian territory to reclaim 246 military devices of different nature and types.

The specialized personnel of the Italian Army, by virtue of specific training, is the only one authorized to intervene, in absolute safety, on the considerable variety and danger of bombs that are found throughout the national territory.
