Milk from Calabria to Tanzania: mission accomplished

11/03/14

The 6 in March the "Mimbelli" ship of the Navy, under the command of vessel captain Davide Berna, reached the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Italian sailors completed the humanitarian mission departed from Lamezia Terme last January, delivering to the Missionary Sisters of Charity of Ivrea, at the Kawe orphanage, pediatric milk and toys that were transported to Taranto by the Italian Army vehicles .

The charity collection, promoted by the military ordinary, Monsignor Santo Marcianò, in coordination with the 2 Air Force Regiment "Sirio", was therefore successfully completed, allowing Kawe's children to receive such a precious commodity. Numerous Calabrian bodies and organizations participated in the humanitarian initiative, including local pharmacies and schools, Voluntary Nurses of the Italian Red Cross and the "Blue Angels" civil protection association. The joint effort enabled more than a ton of pediatric milk and hundreds of toys to be collected.

The men and women of the "Mimbelli" ship, engaged in the NATO "Ocean Shield" mission to combat piracy in the Indian Ocean, delivered humanitarian aid directly to the hands of Sister Valeria and Sr. Adolfina during the stop of 36 hours who, together with the children, asked our sailors to thank Calabria for the significant contribution of solidarity. The operation could be carried out thanks to the support of the Italian embassy in Tanzania and, in particular, of Dr. Valeria La Scala. The ambassador, Dr. Luigi Scotto, personally wanted to greet and thank the ship's crew, complimenting the work done by the Italian Armed Forces in the missions abroad. The photographic testimony of the delivery was possible thanks to the kind collaboration of the lieutenant Alessandro Minerva.

Colonel Francesco Tessitore, as commander of the 2 Air Force Regiment "Sirio", stationed in Lamezia Terme, who had the pleasure of coordinating the collection, expressed his personal gratitude to the Calabrians for the spirit of solidarity and participation significant. The dedication "Thank you Calabria, thank you Italian Red Cross" that the children of Kawe wanted to send - the commander underlined - is the most beautiful satisfaction as testimony of a commitment that, stimulated by the military ordinary, has seen citizens, armed forces and other resources of the country work side by side in achieving a noble purpose.
