For over a month, personnel from the "Folgore" logistics regiment have been on the front lines of the fight against the COVID-19 virus, operating non-stop in competition with the Civil Protection department.
The Italian Army, which has always been at the service of the country, in addition to preparing an articulated air transport plan, has implemented an important project for land transport. This complex operational plan has made it possible to distribute individual protection devices in all areas of the peninsula.
It is precisely in this context that the contribution of the logistic regiment of the paratroopers brigade "Folgore" fits in, which from the first light of dawn until late at night, has transported over thirteen million masks, over three hundred and ten thousand between swabs and reagents, and tens of thousands of gowns, protective suits, gloves, visors, goggles, headphones, thermometers, sanitizers and various other devices, essential in the development of all forms of contrast to the epidemic during the so-called 2 phase.
The activity, which saw the logisticians travel over twenty thousand kilometers, in these days is divided into two different procedures that insist on two main airports: the military airport of Pisa and the airport of Fiumicino, where, on a daily basis, they arrive the medical aids to be distributed.
The operations, carried out at Fiumicino, are for the transport of the devices, which are distributed from Lazio, through the use of specialized structures on flatbed trucks (APS), to the Civil Protection of the Tuscany Region.
The commitment of the logistics regiment in the city of Pisa, from 6 April, is instead divided into 4 phases: reception of the aircraft at the military airport of Pisa; storage of materials at the hangar of the Joint Multimodal Operational Unit; loading of containers, transport of PPE using structures on APS at the Civil Protection of Tuscany and at the Policlinico San Martino in Genoa.
The structures, belonging to the transport company of the regiment, engaged daily, are extremely versatile, a characteristic that makes them able to perform the task with speed and promptness, satisfying the needs of the reception centers of the Tuscan Civil Protection and, at the same time, of the other entities that fight against the virus in the daytime, such as hospitals.
The "Folgore" Logistic Regiment is the highly specialized logistic unit of the "Folgore" paratrooper brigade which, with high material handling capabilities and the innate versatility that allows it to operate at its best within airports, is a point firm in the organization, management and conduct of interregional transport which are guaranteeing the continuous flow of health resources and their allocation where it is most needed.
The fundamental role of the Italian Army within the Country System, from its social function to its operational one, indicates its strategic value as a tool for the community and it is in this emergency situation that the Amaranth Basques of the "Folgore" logistic regiment they are proving to be decisive in tirelessly providing their contribution throughout the country.
