It took place today, at the Central Military Library of Palazzo Esercito in compliance with the rules for the containment of COVID-19, in the presence of the head of SME, gen. ca Pietro Serino, the ceremony with which the general ca Giovanni Fungo, deputy chief of staff of the Army from 1 August 2019, handed over the post to gen. ca Gaetano Zauner.

Faced with a representation of personnel, the Army Chief of Staff addressed words of gratitude to General Fungo, highlighting the very high professional profile shown in assisting all the staff activities of the EMS, stating that "The work of the Armed Force today is, more than ever, characterized by sudden changes and by a confrontation with ever new challenges and emerging risks, for which a commander has a great responsibility". To General Zauner, who recently returned from Turkey where he held the position of deputy commander of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps (NRDC), wished the best of luck in carrying out the new post, on the path traced by his predecessor, towards the important challenges that the Army will have to face.

In thanking General Serino and all his collaborators, General Fungo drew attention to the silent work carried out in these two years by all the staff of the Army General Staff and of the dependent commands, expressing their sentiments of esteem for the exceptional service results achieved and for loyal and effective collaboration. He expressed his best wishes to the new SME sub-chief for the job.

General Zauner, in his greeting address, expressed gratitude to General Serino for the trust granted to him, stating that he will carry out the delicate task assumed with all the commitment, energy and synergy possible, facing the challenges connected to the commitments of his new position.

General Fungo will continue to hold the position of commander of the Land Operational Forces and Army Operational Command (COMFOTER COE) assumed last June.
