The Chief of Staff of the Italian Army, Corps General Pietro Serino, took part in the Conference of the European Armies, which this year took place in the German town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen from 6 to 8 July.

The important forum meets annually to discuss cooperation initiatives and projects between the land military forces located on European territory and to share experiences between NATO allies and partners in matters of security and stability.

The event represents the most important United States Army Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF)-led forum on the subject of Theater Security Cooperation which, at the same time, offers the European ground force commanders the opportunity to strengthen bi / multilateral relations.

During the two days of work, the participants analyzed, in different sessions, multiple operational aspects, including possible requirements, planning, training and interoperability of the armies.

The symposium represented a moment of comparison and exchange of views on the evolution of the scenarios of use as well as allowing to draw important food for thought from the recent experiences gained in the conduct of multinational training activities and in the use of the units in the various theaters of operation, on which to develop possible actions to be implemented to face the challenges of the near future.

During his speech, the head of SME, with particular reference to interoperability, said he was convinced that "It is necessary to adopt standards and protocols whose technical and intellectual property is shared between NATO nations and not just one, in order to allow individual countries to commit to producing their own systems, which however fully and rigorously implement the standards and NATO protocols. This is the only way, if you want a real, effective interoperability between our forces ".

On the sidelines of the work of the forum, General Serino took part in bilateral meetings with the commanders of the land instruments of France, Germany, UK, Sweden, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Greece.
