Last Thursday, at the Central Library of Palazzo Esercito, in Rome, in the presence of the Army Chief of Staff, General of the Army Corps, Pietro Serino and the President of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Giorgio Saccoccia, was A collaboration agreement in the space sector was signed between the two institutions.

The signing of the Agreement stems from a common desire to cooperate between the Italian Space Agency and the Italian Army which saw an opportunity for professional growth and the ability to generate innovation in sharing their mutual excellence and skills in the space sector. It will represent the first official form of collaboration between the Army and the government body in the space sector and will launch a series of joint study activities in the thematic areas related to the production of innovative cartographic tools, the sharing of technologies developed in the "space" environment, nuclear, biological and chemical defense and emerging satellite 5G technologies.

During his speech, Saccoccia highlighted that "Today, thanks to the agreement between ASI and the Army, the historic collaboration with the Defense Administration that our respective Administrations have been carrying out for years, for example with cutting-edge Earth observation systems, is consolidated, and lay the foundations for the future. In particular, with the signing of this agreement, close cooperation is initiated on innovative issues such as digital mapping of the earth, the resilience of communications in favor of the entire space ecosystem. A virtuous synergy at the service of our country ".

At the sign of the signature, General Serino, during his address, wanted to underline that today's agreement formalizes a collaboration that has existed for years between the two administrations, adding that "The interaction between space and the terrestrial dimension is today increasingly permeated and indispensable" and that "The future of our country is also at stake in space, in which to make our young people and all citizens grow and give opportunities".

For some time now, the Army has considered space as an indispensable element of support for terrestrial operations because it is a vital tool for maintaining information supremacy in current and future scenarios of use, considering that the space domain has a direct influence on effectiveness of the missions, in which the terrestrial component will continue to represent the decisive element.

This collaboration, which is part of the framework agreement already in place between ASI and the Defense Staff, aims at the common goal of increasing synergies on national programs, resources and professional skills also in order to optimize public investments in this sector and maximize the effectiveness of the defense capabilities at the service of the community.
