Today the Army Lagunari celebrate the 37th anniversary of the official recognition of the specialty.
Guardians of the glorious memories of the "Fanti da Mar" who had the task of defending the territories of the Republic of Venice, the lagoons are today a modern and fundamental operational pawn for an Army increasingly engaged in Italy and abroad.
The Lagunari regiment is the only infantry unit of the Army specialized in amphibious operations, whose operational mobility in water is the main feature, able to operate in full autonomy on any type of terrain. Trained to act in contexts where the presence of two elements (land and water) limits the use of normal infantry regiments, the lagoons are equipped with "assault boats" and "amphibious vehicles" and can easily operate in "waters internal ”in the classic“ riverine ”operations (rivers, lakes and lagoons) and at sea, performing the typical tasks of amphibious assault infantry in diversified operational contexts.
On June 25, 1984, with DPR signed by the Minister of Defense, the recognition of the "Lagunari" Specialty established on January 9, 1951 as the "Lagunari Forces Sector" was sanctioned. The War Flag of the "SERENISSIMA" Lagunari regiment is decorated with a Gold Medal for Valor of the Army awarded for the events of An Nassiriyah-Iraq on 05-06 August 2004, Silver Medal for Valor of the Army for activities in the national territory and the Balkan theater carried out in the period 1951-2003, and the Army's Silver Cross of Merit for having operated on Lebanese soil in 2006-2007.
