The Grenadiers of Sardinia honor the Duke of San Pietro

(To Army Majority State)
18/02/23

Yesterday morning, in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome, the "Granatieri di Sardegna" celebrated mass in memory of Don Alberto Genovese, Duke of San Pietro on the anniversary of his death.

This year, in addition to the 1st regiment and the 2nd regiment, the 3rd command and tactical support department "Guards" also marched.

Don Bernardino Antonio Genovese, Sardinian patrician, father of Alberto, on 10 July 1744, set up in Cagliari, at his own expense, the regiment of Sardinia with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of the settlers who had just landed on the island of San Pietro, overlooking the Sardinian coasts . In 1776, his son donated 120.000 old lire of Piedmont to the regiment, fixing the use of their income in a special "testamentary" writing for the establishment and subsequent maintenance of regimental music, as well as to help the widows of fallen soldiers. He also ordered that it be celebrated: "perpetually… anniversary in suffrage and in memory of him, Mr. Duke Alberto, on the anniversary day of his death".

The tradition is perpetuated by the Grenadiers of Sardinia descendants in direct line of the ancient regiment of Sardinia.

In addition to political personalities and military authorities, the ceremony was attended by the commander of the Southern Operational Forces, army corps general Giuseppenicola Tota, some former Army chiefs of staff, former commanders of the "Granatieri di Sardegna" brigade - as well as the current, brigadier general Giovanni Brafa Musicoro - representatives of the fighting and military associations Weapon and Roman citizens. The presence of direct descendants of Don Alberto Genovese is significant, demonstrating an attachment to a centuries-old tradition that has always seen them involved and close to the "Giants with Alamari".

The "Grenadiers", in addition to having participated in the main international missions in which the Italian Army is engaged, contribute to guaranteeing, together with other Army departments, a vigilant and constant presence in the territory of the Capital, in Lazio and in the nearby Region Umbria as part of the "Strade Sicure" operation.

In addition to the many operational/training activities, the most important garrison services of the Capital and high representation at national institutions are added.
