Army bomb disposal experts yesterday proceeded with the disarming and detonation of a 250-pound (113 kg) aircraft bomb dating back to the Second World War. The disposal of the device, found in the municipality of Aquino (FR), was conducted by specialists from the 6th Pioneer Engineer Regiment of Rome.
The operations, coordinated by the prefecture of Frosinone, began at 09:00 with the clearing of an area of 1.170 meters radius from the point of discovery with the consequent evacuation of approximately 300 citizens.
The operators of the 6th Pioneer Engineer Regiment, once the evacuation phase was completed, began the defusing operation, removing the two fuses present on the device, one at the nose and one at the tail, both armed. Once the latter were neutralized, the war remnant was transported to a suitable site for detonation.
In the last year, the artificer units of the engineer regiments have conducted 2.356 interventions throughout the country, neutralizing 12.666 war relics, including 21 aerial bombs dating back to the world conflicts.
Results achieved thanks to training that allows the women and men of the Army to stay updated on the latest technologies, ensuring the highest standards of safety and competence through the use of consolidated procedures.
