Day of remembrance in Basovizza

Yesterday, on the national monument of the Foiba of Basovizza in Trieste, the solemn ceremony of the "Day of remembrance" was held, an anniversary set up by the Italian Parliament in memory of the victims of the sinkholes, of the Dalmatian Julian exodus and of the events of the eastern border of the second war.

The ceremony began at 10.00 when the highest local and provincial civil authorities, accompanied by the Regional Army Commander, Brigadier General Alessandro Guarisco by the Prefect of Trieste, dr. Francesca Garufi and the Governor of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Debora Serracchiani, received military honors from a military department of the Nunziatella and placed a laurel wreath on the monument in the presence of over 400 Alpine troops of the regional Ana and numerous civil authorities and military.

The solemn ceremony ended with the Holy Mass officiated by His Eminence Monsignor Giampaolo Crepaldi, Bishop of Trieste. On the afternoon the ceremony continued, at 14.00, with the deposition of a laurel wreath on the monument by the Honorable Pietro Grasso , President of the Senate.
