From 14 to 17 September, the paratroopers of the 183rd regiment nimbus they attended a course on the simulation system Engagement Skills Trainer (EST) held in Vicenza in the Del Din barracks in coordination with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

In its simplest use, the EST appears as a computerized shooting simulator that uses laser technology on targets displayed on a screen. In reality, the potential of the system is manifold: about ten shooting ranges, different usable weapons, different target distances.

An interesting part is represented by the compressed air mechanism that reproduces shot and recoil making the firing action very realistic and close to 90% of the real shooting sensation.

The most complex part of the system involves the projection of scenarios that immerse the team in the various operational contexts in which the military found themselves operating. There are many situations in which the team is immersed in the simulator: ambushes, patrols, checkpoints, built-up areas.

This interaction with the scenario allows to improve the coordination skills of the unit and to train the decision-making skills of each paratrooper who trains himself to react to the situation that is proposed, quickly and effectively.

The computer records shots and trajectories and at the end of the operation a replay of the action is projected, precisely highlighting the methods in which the personnel fired. This allows a quick check on procedures, positive aspects and points to improve regarding the action just performed.

The instructors of the 183rd nimbus have obtained the certification that enables them to use this simulation system and which becomes part of the training possibilities of the Folgore paratroopers.

Il command for operational forces north, a high command of the Army that has the “Folgore” brigade under it, has long favored the use of simulators that have become increasingly important in training, maintaining and improving personnel skills. Technological tools such as EST make it possible to quickly train staff in the various exercises to be carried out, leading to substantial savings in economic resources, time and safeguarding the environment.

The simulator, used by the US military of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, represents the will on the part of the air troops of different armies to create a training bond, as well as an operational one, within the wider Airborne Community.
