Army: Emergency Civil Protection Agreement

24/07/14

The head of civil protection, prefect Franco Gabrielli, and the army chief of staff, General Claudio Graziano, signed a collaboration agreement between the army and the civil protection department (DPC) for the use of satellite assets of armed force in emergency activities.

The agreement provides that an army unit, composed of personnel and specialized vehicles, is able to intervene, within a maximum of six hours from the occurrence of the emergency, to ensure satellite communications between the DPC headquarters in Rome and the command and control direction deployed in the intervention area.

The renewable agreement has a duration of one year.

The assets that are the subject of the agreement, which will be taken from the 11 ° army transmission regiment, are an example of the dual capabilities that the terrestrial armed force can make available to the country.

The same skills used in international operations in which the Italian army is called to intervene are used in collaboration with civil protection in all the emergencies that have affected the Italian territory in recent years.

The collaboration procedures between the army and the civil protection department were further tested, even recently, in the "Galileo 2014" exercise held in Padua last June with the involvement of 1000 army men and all members of the national service of the civil protection.
