This morning the Army engineers, coming from the railway engineers regiment of Castel Maggiore (BO), completed the operations of defusing a war device found in the municipality of Marsciano (PG).
The device, a 1000-pound American-made aircraft bomb with a total weight of approximately 454 kg and 240 kg of TNT, dating back to the Second World War, was found in very poor condition.
The clean-up operations, coordinated by the Prefecture of Perugia and the command North Operating Forces of the Army of Padua took place in two distinct phases during which the device was initially neutralized by removing the detonation systems, and subsequently detonated in an area identified and prepared in such a way as to protect public safety.
To ensure adequate safety during the removal of the detonation system, it was necessary to close traffic on some roads adjacent to the area where the device was found and evacuate approximately 5000 inhabitants.
The experience of the Army specialists of Castel Maggiore is well demonstrated, considering that since the beginning of the year, in their area of competence (Marche Region, Umbria, Republic of San Marino and in the provinces of Bologna, Forlì Cesena, Rimini and Florence) approximately 315 interventions have been carried out, of which 4 were complex and saw the destruction of the same number of aerial bombs.
The Italian Army, thanks to its capabilities, is able to intervene throughout the national territory in cases of public utility and in situations of natural disasters, proving to be a resource at the service of the country.
