Defused and destroyed two aircraft bombs dating back to the 2nd World War

At the first light of dawn, a team of Army bomb squads, under the 10th Engineer Regiment of Cremona, completed a demanding activity of reclamation of the territory, neutralizing two aircraft bombs dating back to the 2nd World War.

The bombs, weighing 500 pounds and of English manufacture, containing more than 100 kg of high-potential explosives, were found on 8 June during the expansion works of the freight yard in the municipality of Segrate (MI).

In the days following the discovery of the bombs, following the reconnaissance and assessments of the bomb squad, the sappers of the "Ariete" brigade have created temporary protection structures in order to mitigate the effects of an accidental detonation during the despolettamento operations, thus reducing the inconvenience to citizenship.

The complex operations to secure the devices, carried out in full compliance with the containment measures and contrasting the spread of Covid-19, developed as planned, thanks to the perfect synergy of all the institutional subjects involved, directed and coordinated by the prefecture from Milan.

In order to ensure an adequate safety framework, during the removal of the ignition systems, carried out from 10.00 to 12.00, the traffic of the Milan-Bergamo-Brescia railway line and the airspace of the airport were prohibited of Linate.

In conclusion, the blasting operations were carried out successfully in the night between Saturday and Sunday to limit the impact on flights arriving and taking off from the nearby airport. The specialists of the Army's 10th Engineer Regiment, coordinated by the command alpine troops, they intervene almost daily in the occasional reclamation of the territory from war remnants, with competence in the Lombardy region.

In the current year, 44 interventions have already been carried out for a total of 136 reclaimed ordnance, including 4 aircraft bombs.

The Army, thanks to the professional versatility of its departments, in addition to operational employment in international missions, is able to intervene in cases of need for public safety and security, in the disposal of bombs as well as in cases of public disasters. .
