Increase the capacity of the Sapling Engineers departments of the Southern Operational Forces to operate in a joint and standardized way, even during the night and through the use of boats, for the conduct of tactical mobility, countermobility and information gathering activities in the context of warfighting and multi-weapon: this is the aim of the "Salamandra 2024" exercise.
The activity, organized and conducted by the 5th sapper engineer regiment of the "Sassari" brigade, was attended by sapper teams from the 4th regiment of the "Aosta" brigade, the 11th regiment of the "Pinerolo" brigade, the 21st regiment of the "Garibaldi", two rifle squads of the 152nd "Sassari" infantry regiment and an HH-412A helicopter of the 21st "Orsa Maggiore" permanent detachment of the 2nd "Sirio" regiment of the Army Aviation.
The exercise, organized in compliance with the constraints of landscape protection and assets of historical and cultural interest, took place in the waters of Lake Omodeo, the largest artificial basin in Europe. In the first phase the personnel trained to operate in a river environment on board the vessels while, in the second phase, the engineers engaged in the tactical activities of forcing a minefield, in the technical reconnaissance of the river banks, in tactical navigation and , making use of the abseiling technique, in the positioning of demolition charges.
