The "Deep Dark 22" exercise that the 5th land artillery regiment "Superga" of Portogruaro conducted in order to refine and perfect the command and control procedures of the MLRS-I rocket launcher system (Multiple Launch Rocket System - Improved).
During the first week, the activities focused on the preparation of personnel, vehicles and materials and the logistical movement, preparatory to the exercise, of the MLRS-I platforms at the training area of Cellina Meduna (PN) was completed.
In the second week, a blank specialty training was conducted, which saw the execution of planned and unplanned intervention requests, day and night deployment changes, failure simulations with the activation of the malfunction management protocols from part of the crews.
The exercise also saw a part dedicated to the loading and unloading of ammunition, in order to test the department's procedures.
In conjunction with the exercise, the 5th “Superga” hosted, as part of the bilateral cooperation activities conducted by the Army, the visit of two officers of the 1st French artillery regiment, equipped with a similar weapon system. The guests from beyond the Alps were able to appreciate the training level achieved by the Italian MLRS crews and, through a fruitful comparison, identify similarities and peculiarities of use. The activity will be re-proposed, with reversed parts, in the next month of June.
The specialty training conducted by the "Superga", as well as the bilateral meeting, represented an important moment to trace the foundations of a common path aimed at increasing interoperability and the exchange of expertise and to further strengthen the existing links between the two Armies.
