Completed joint Italian-French exercise

07/04/14

In recent days, the joint Italian-French exercise, called Casalps, ended with a team from the 1 ° Fossano mountain artillery regiment.

The week-long exercise in the Valloire region involved a highly specialized team in the acquisition of targets for air and artillery interventions, as part of the mixed Italian-French unit to which the brigade belongs Alpine Taurinense.

The core of the 1 regiment, inserted in a French unit of the 93 mountain regiment, worked throughout the period, alongside the French team, interacting and integrating with them and simulating movements in hostile territories, from where to coordinate interventions of the air component and mortars, if required.

A scenario made realistic by the alpine environment and by the difficulties the team has faced every day alongside colleagues across the Alps.

The mountain environment has allowed the staff to train on the most familiar terrain. During the exercise, 8 kilometers were run with skis on off-piste routes and equipment that weighed over 25 kilos.

The activity also provided for an overnight stay at over 2400 meters of altitude and numerous activations that came from the French command, day and night, putting the staff in the best condition for an important moment of professional growth, confirming the results achieved in phase of training.

The full integration and the exchange of professional experiences have allowed us to further refine the operating procedures, also in view of the future training steps in which the 1 ° from mountain will be called to participate.

It is not the first activity of its kind in which the 1st Mountain Artillery Regiment participates: already in 2012, units and teams have started cooperation phases with French units.

The mutual understanding of procedures and skills is an aspect that must be kept in strong consideration, with a view to integrating the components of the various European armies.
