The handover ceremony at the top of the infrastructure command took place a few days ago at the "Ettore Rosso" barracks in Rome, in the presence of the commander of the Engineers, Major General Giuseppe Bossa. In front of the numerous military and civil authorities present, Brigadier General Giuseppe Schiariti handed over command to his peer William De Matteis.
General Bossa, in his speech, expressed his thanks to General Schiariti for the activities carried out in almost two years, underlining the strategic value of the infrastructure sector and the commitment shown in managing the delicate phase of transition of dependence of the infrastructure departments from the high commands to the Engineers Command. This solution has allowed the management of extraordinary maintenance activities and the modernization of the Army's infrastructure park in a unitary perspective, with the achievement of significant objectives.
General Schiariti took stock of his experience as commander of Infrastructure and thanked the men and women under his command, who with their passion, dedication, professionalism and cohesion have made the new Infrastructure Command a unit of excellence since the beginning.
The Infrastructure Command was established on 1 July 2020 following the reorganisation of the Army's infrastructure area which, according to a multi-year and phased development, saw the transfer to its dependencies of all the technical execution bodies of the engineering corps that were distributed across the three multifunction commands. From 7 September 2020, the operational department of the infrastructure engineering corps passed from the infrastructure department to the dependencies of the command.
As regards the works sector, it acts as a client for the dependent bodies and is the primary spending authority for the sector of operations and the decentralised investment share of the works management and state property.
