Celebration in Bologna of the "Memorial Day"

Yesterday, the commemoration of the "Memorial Day" took place in Bologna.

At the ceremony, which included the deposition of a tribute to the monument dedicated to the soldiers who died in the camps, in the Monumental Cemetery of the Certosa, and the subsequent deposition of laurel wreaths on the tombstones of the martyrs of the former deportees and ex prisoners, in the central Piazza del Neptune was attended by the Vice Prefect Vicar of Bologna, Dr. Rita Stentella, the Mayor of Bologna, Dr. Virginio Merola, the President of the Regional Legislative Assembly, Dr. Palma Costi, the President of the Provincial Council, Dr. Stefano Caliandro, the Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Community of Bologna, Rav. Dr. Alberto Sermoneta, the Regional Army Commander, Division General Antonio De Vita, the Regional Commanders of the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza, as well as numerous military and civil authorities.

The anniversary, already established by Italy with law no. 211 of 20 July 2000 and recognized by the UN with resolution 60/7 of 1 November 2005, recalls the extermination of the Jewish people (known as the Shoah) by the Nazis during the Second World War, together with 24.356 "Righteous among the Nations ”, of which 534 Italians, who, at the risk of their own lives, promoted initiatives to protect the persecuted Jews and save them from death. January 27, 1945, is also the date on which the allied troops, during the offensive towards Berlin, arrived at the Polish city of Auschwitz, discovered the local concentration camp, revealing to the world the horror of the Nazi genocide.
