Yesterday, after hours of work by the Italian Army bomb squad, the reclamation work of a World War II aircraft bomb weighing 500 pounds and of American origin, containing an explosive charge equal to approximately 280 lbs (127 kilograms).
The specialists of the 21st guastatori genius regiment, unit of the "Garibaldi" bersaglieri brigade responsible for the remediation of war remnants throughout the Campania region, worked in coordination with the prefecture of Avellino, adopting all safety procedures, in full compliance of the current legislation on the prevention of contagion from COVID-19.
The remnant of the war was found on 23 February last, under the embankment of a railway bridge on the Mercato San Severino-Avellino section, in the Municipality of Montoro (AV). The remediation activities involved the implementation of an evacuation area of approximately 800 meters, planned and implemented in coordination with the local authorities in just one month.
In detail, on the premise of the intervention, the provision of energy services was limited and approximately 165 inhabitants were evacuated, for a total of 52 families.
At about 08.00 am, in synergy with the Italian Railway Network (FS Italiane Group), the operators of the Italian Army started loading the technical materials on a railway platform at the Montoro-Forino station.
At about 09.00, the activities for the removal of the two fuzes began, which took place safely, with subsequent neutralization on site within the scheduled time. Subsequently, the sappers of the "Garibaldi" brigade guaranteed the transport on the railway. The finalization of the intervention ended with the destruction of the body of the bomb at the quarry in the municipality of Salza Irpina (AV). The reclamation work had a regular end in the early afternoon, at about 15.30 pm.
The use of CMD (Conventional Munition Disposal) operators of the Italian Army confirms a constant presence of the Amata Force on the national territory to carry out specific tasks in circumstances of public calamity and in other cases of extraordinary need and urgency.
