The bomb squad of the Italian Army under the 8th "Folgore" parachute sapper engineer regiment intervened in the municipality of Lugo (RA) to neutralize a war remnant dating back to the Second World War.

The bomb, an aircraft bomb weighing 100 kg of high explosive, was found during excavation work in a building site and promptly placed in safe conditions by a team of specialists.

The delicate reclamation operations, coordinated by the prefecture of Ravenna and by the northern operative forces command of Padua, began on Thursday 23 March at 08:00 following the completion of the evacuation procedures of the clearing area (350 meters from the place of blasting).

The bomb squad first secured the bomb and then removed it and transported it to an area in the municipality of Filo di Alfonsine (RA) where it was detonated.

To guarantee the maximum safety framework, the engineering specialists have created works of field fortifications of the effects of an intentional explosion in the neutralization phase, specially designed for the need both to protect the neighboring buildings and to reduce the inconvenience to the resident population. The complex work made it possible to significantly limit the clearance radius.

In 2022, over 900 bombs were neutralized in more than 350 interventions conducted by paratrooper sappers in the 7 provinces of competence.
