Today we celebrate the anniversary of the Weapon of Engineers. On June 24, 1918, diggers, telegraphers, bridges, miners and railway workers fought heroically on what was the last day of the "solstice battle", contributing decisively to the success of Italy. Thanks to their work “Tenacious, Indefatigable and Modest”, as the motivation states, the War Flag of the Corps of Engineers was decorated with a Gold Medal for Military Valor.
The origins of the Genius go back to the time of Julius Caesar when the first bridges over the Reno river were thrown, up to 1775 with the creation of the body of the Genius of the Sardinian Army and to 1861 with the definitive constitution of the Arma del Genius and, at the same time, of the Italian Army.
Today, thanks to the multiple capabilities that it is able to express, from the laying of bridges, to the restoration of railway connections, to the construction of roads and infrastructures and to the support for deployment and maneuvering, the Arma del Genio plays a leading role. order.
The Army Engineers represent a condensation of technical and combat skills that give their Departments a very high level of versatility.
In addition to operational use in international missions, the Engineers are able to intervene, at any time and with minimum notice, throughout the national territory, both in operations to support the population hit by natural disasters, and in emergency situations such as the one that is passing through our country. To underline, then, the irreplaceable work of the bomb squads, used in the reclamation of the remnants of the war from the two world wars which, despite the passing of the years, continue to represent a high risk for public safety.
In continuous and constant evolution to respond effectively and efficiently to the needs of the Army, the Arma del Genio has recently started a process of reconfiguration of the infrastructural sector with the aim of bringing together all the Departments operating in the specific branch under a single Command, thus ensuring uniqueness of vision and direction and considerably increasing the ability to intervene in carrying out works aimed at modernizing the military infrastructure park.
Through continuous training and constant training in the use of technologically advanced means and materials designed to be always ready to face the modern challenges dictated by the current operational scenarios, the engineers continue unabated in their evolutionary process, representing, today as yesterday, faithful to their ideals, one of the important components of the Italian Army.
