Afghanistan: mission accomplished for the MAT of the Italian contingent

Colonel Ciro Chirico yesterday left the leadership of the Military Advisory Team (MAT), the unit of the Italian contingent of ISAF in charge of the formation of cadres of the units of the Afghan army which, together with the final phase of the transition, scheduled by the end of 2014, they are preparing to take responsibility for security in the country.

During the ceremony, held in the Italian base of "Camp Arena" in the presence of the commander of the 207 ° corps, general Taj Mohammad Jahed, Colonel Chirico praised his men for the professionalism with which they developed the consulting activities and assistance to the Afghan security forces, "creators of the full and autonomous capacity to control the territory, especially during the last presidential elections".

Numerous educational activities have been successfully carried out by the Military Advisory Team ranging from the correct application of radio communications procedures to the use of IT systems, from the identification and deactivation of improvised explosive devices to practical first aid interventions for immediate evacuation of the wounded in combat, from the symposiums on the coordinated use of land-based weapons systems in use by the Afghan army and of ISAF air assets for the management and security of air space to the "train the trainer" programs for the training of future Afghan military instructors, many of them women.
