A new school was inaugurated yesterday in Afghanistan by the Italian soldiers of the Regional Command West, the Italian-led ISAF command based on the “Sassari” brigade. The structure, worth over 145 thousand euros, was achieved thanks to the funds made available by the ministry of defense, it rises in Abu Walid, a village on the outskirts of Herat.

The school, 16 classes spread over two floors, is equipped with all essential services and will allow hundreds of students of all kinds and ages to finally be accommodated in modern and welcoming classrooms, where they were previously forced to attend classes in crumbling tents and in unsafe structures.

Attending the inauguration ceremony were the commander of the Regional Command West, General Manlio Scopigno, the governor of the province of Herat Sayed Fazullah Wahidi, the head of the education department Basir Ahmad Arwin Taher and numerous representatives of the provincial council.

In addressing the many young students present for the occasion, General Scopigno recalled that "this structure is added to the other seventy schools built in the province of Herat thanks to the contribution of the Italian contingent of ISAF". "A serious and concrete contribution - continued the general - carried out during the nine years of presence in Herat of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (the military component of the Italian contingent dedicated to development and reconstruction) which has always worked with great determination for the benefit of a sector, such as school and education, of fundamental importance for the future and progress of the country ".

The school building, built in just six months from the drafting of the preliminary project to the final delivery of the works, was carried out in close coordination with the local authorities making use of local labor, with positive economic repercussions on the territory.
