This morning in Palermo, the 71 anniversary of the bombing of the city, which took place during the last war, was celebrated.

In the presence of the banner of the municipality, decorated with a gold medal for military valor precisely because of the high tribute and the very serious losses among the population due to the bombing, the commander of the Southern Military Region, general of Corrado Dalzini, together with the deputy mayor of the city and the president of the Palermo section of the civil war victims association, he placed a laurel wreath in front of the monument commemorating the massacre.

"During the Second World War the city of Palermo suffered frequent and ruthless bombing for over three years, culminating in the 9 May 1943 when 222 Anglo-American bombers unloaded 1.114 bombs from 227 kilos," General Dalzini recalled, "flew too high for the flak and it was the disaster ".

The piazzetta Sett'Angeli remained the symbol of the bombing, where the ceremony took place, in memory of the tragedy that took place in the air-raid shelter built in its subsoil which, defended by a covering of limited thickness, did not resist the bombs, becoming a sepulcher for hundreds of victims.

Numerous representatives of the institutions, as well as students and citizens from Palermo, joined the painful moment of recollection.
