Historically belonging to the Artillery Corps, the foundation of the CBRN units dates back to 1 July 1923, when the Military Chemical Service it was established to deal with new threats that emerged during the First World War, in particular to deal with the use of chemical weapons. Over time, the service's expertise expanded to also include biological, radiological and nuclear threats, leading to the birth of CBRN units as we know them today.

During the ceremony, the commander of the 7th regiment, Colonel Marco Baleani, recalled how the anniversary of the establishment of the CBRN units of the Italian Army is a moment of reflection on the values and traditions that represent its identity, as well as an opportunity in recognition of the tireless work and commitment of men and women who, for over a century, have dedicated their lives to defense against invisible and lethal threats.

CBRN units are tasked with preventing, detecting and responding to attacks and incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents. Their rigorous training and the use of advanced technologies allow the regiment to operate effectively in a wide range of operational scenarios, including on the national territory, in synergy with the other components of the State responsible for dealing with emergency and crisis situations.

With the spirit of innovation and their professionalism, collaborating with universities, research institutes and industries to develop new detection, protection and decontamination tools and techniques, CBRN units today continue to be a bulwark of safety and security to address and mitigate chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.
