04/06/15

The cruiser Portaeromobili Giuseppe Garibaldi, the first Unit of this kind in the Italian Navy, was built in the Cantieri Navali di Monfalcone and there launched the 04 June 1983.

Entered into service in the 1985, it has as usual port of assignment Taranto and, starting from the 2014, it has been placed under the organic and operative dependencies of the newly established Command of the Third Naval Group, stationed in the Brindisi base. Thanks to its versatility of use, it has played a fundamental role over the years in all the main international missions that saw the Navy involved.

The first activity in which the ship took part was the RESTORE HOPE operation in Somalia, from 18 February to 5 April of 1994, in support of amphibious operations for the return of the Italian contingent. Also in Somalia, from January to March of the 1995, the Unit was part of the UNOSOM Task Force in support of the UN contingent.

As part of the DINAK operation, when Italy provided a fundamental operational and logistic support to the Allied operations for the resolution of the Yugoslav crisis, Garibaldi Ship was used in the Adriatic from the 26 April to the 17 June 1999. From November 2001 to March 2002 the Unit has participated as an aircraft carrier and Command headquarters, in the ENDURING FREEDOM operation, remaining continuously at sea for 87 days without technical stops and covering approximately 20000 miles. For the whole period, the Unit was used as a naval vehicle for control, interception and interdiction at sea, as well as a launching platform for AV8B + aircraft which, together with other air assets of the coalition, carried out support missions and aerial ban on Afghan territory.

In the summer of 2006 the Navy promptly intervened in the crisis in Lebanon, at first with the MIMOSA operation and subsequently with the LEONTE operation of which, from the 29 August to the 19 October, Nave Garibaldi was the headquarters of the Command. In this period the activity of the embarked air group contributed to the control of the merchant traffic in transit towards the Lebanese coasts, while the naval force activity was centered on the amphibious landing in southern Lebanon for the introduction of an interforce force of about 1000 soldiers of the then San Marco Regiment, of the Lagoons and Special Forces.

In March 2011, as part of the Libyan crisis, Nave Garibaldi provided support for international activities in the ODISSEY DAWN operation. Subsequently, from 26 March to 26 July, the Unit took part in the UNIFIED PROTECTOR operation, of which for about two months it was also the headquarters of Command. The activity carried out by the coalition's naval and air assets, in compliance with the UN Security Council's 1970 and 1973 resolutions, was aimed at guaranteeing compliance with the arms embargo by sea and the implementation of the Fly Zone against Libya. Also on this occasion Nave Garibaldi has shown excellent operational and logistic skills by staying on the sea continuously for 78 days and traveling over 20000 miles.

In the two years preceding the APP work stop at the Maritime Military Arsenal of Taranto, which began in October 2013 and ended in October 2014 with well 4 months in advance, the Unit participated in all the advanced add-on activities MARE APERTO - AMPHEX as Flagship of the Command of the Forces of Highland.
