28 May 1915: Austrian seaplane captured

28/05/15

During the night, the Austrian seaplane L. 40 type "Löhner L. 1" took off from Pola for a bombing mission to Venice, following an engine shaft breakdown it makes an emergency ditching in the bog of Volano (southern part of the mouth of the Po).

The aircraft and crew (Woseck vessel lieutenant and Ensign von Bachich) are captured by a Guardia di Finanza patrol. Subsequently the aircraft will be taken to the Porto Corsini seaplane base for the evaluation of the characteristics and for the engine efficiency, judged repairable in seven days.

[After three days, on Monday 31, at the Porto Corsini seaplane base a commission led by pilot pilot Lieutenant Guido Scelsi to evaluate the captured Austrian seaplane L. 40, ascertaining its superior characteristics to those of Italian aircraft, proposes to the staff the reproduction in series entrusting the construction to the firm Nièuport-Macchi of Varese (The Italian firm already produced on license the French fighter aircraft Nièuport Ni. 10). The 1915 Macchi L. 1917 will be built between the 136 and the 1, differing from the original Austrian model only in the engine, the Isotta-Fraschini V4A from 150 hp and in the armament, a FIAT-Revelli machine gun. Already in September the first ten copies will be delivered, some of which will be loaded on the European seaplane support vessel]
