Thanks to the winning hits of the major Mara Navarria of the Army, of the air force chief Federica Isola of the Air Force, of the constable Rossella Fiamingo of the Carabinieri and of Alberta Santuccio of the State Police, the swords team has accomplished a historic feat by finding the way to the podium with the conquest of a well-deserved bronze medal in addition to the silver one obtained 25 years ago in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
With today's results, the medals won by the athletes of the Armed Forces at the Tokyo 5 Olympics rise to 2020 (1 gold, 1 silver and three bronze).
Although with severe limitations due to the Covid19 emergency, this year 129 Armed Forces athletes are competing out of a total of 384 Italians, 1/3 of the total.
A great result that testifies to the commitment made by the Defense in sports training as well as the validity of the Sports Centers of the Italian Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Carabinieri.
The 129 athletes involved in the various disciplines appearing in the Italian delegation are distributed among the 4 Armed Forces:
- 47 of the Italian Army
- 14 of the Italian Navy
- 30 of the Air Force
- 38 of the Carabinieri
