Tennis: the Air Force weather forecast for the Rome Internationals

From 6 to 19 May, on the occasion of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia at the Foro Italico in Rome, the Air Force will ensure real-time weather forecasts for the entire duration of the Tennis Tournament.

Thanks to the on-site placement of a weather radar, a Mobile Weather Unit – UMM and three tactical weather stations – TACMET, a team of forecasters and specialists Meteorological Service of the Armed Forces, supported by Re.SIA technicians – automated information systems department of Rome-Acquasanta and of the 4th telecommunications and systems brigade for air defense and flight assistance of Borgo Piave (LT), will ensure the management of the Tournament the necessary contribution to the organization of the various competition sessions, the start of the match or resumption following any interruptions.

Thanks to an agreement with Sport e Salute - a state company that deals with the development of sport in Italy - the Air Force, through the study and measurement of the atmospheric values ​​provided by specific sensors installed in various points of the Foro Italico, will therefore provide the data necessary to issue, even several times a day depending on needs, a weather report available not only to the experts, but also to the players themselves, who will be able to access more specific information such as wind intensity and direction, humidity and pressure.

The team of specialists from the Armed Forces Meteorological Service has developed, for this occasion, a forecasting tool with a spatial resolution of 500 m and an experimental nature in order to operate in support of the tournament management. Furthermore, AM forecasters will be present at the Foro Italico to facilitate management choices in critical situations in meteorological terms. At the same time, the Tournament information platforms will be available to the public and all users - the website, the app and the information panels at the Foro Italico - which integrate the meteorological information produced by the AM staff in order to enjoy the beauty of the event and be constantly informed about weather conditions.
