This morning, the annual Summit of the opened at Villa MadamaInternational Association of Gendarmerie and Military Police Forces (FIEP), at the end of which the Carabinieri, which had assumed the presidency in October 2023, will hand over the baton to the French National Gendarmerie. The meeting was attended by the commanders/general directors of the 21 gendarmeries and police forces with military status who, during their stay in Italy, will be received by the President of the Republic.
Annually, a general theme is identified as the object of study, during the Italian presidency, FIEP has focused attention on the fight against environmental crimes, with a view to protecting biodiversity and ecosystems as a priority. The particular theme is deeply felt by the Arma, the most complex environmental police force in Europe, and the comparison with other gendarmerie and police forces has proven useful and proactive for a common commitment in defense of the environment, for the development of shared good practices and common protocols.
In 2024, FIEP celebrated its thirtieth anniversary. In fact, on 12 May 1994, the tripartite commission, composed of the Carabinieri, the French National Gendarmerie and the Spanish Guardia Civil. In 1996 the Portuguese Republican National Guard joined and the following year the association, which in the meantime had become quadripartite commission, was definitively named FIEP, an acronym formed from the initials of the names of the Member Countries at that time: France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. With subsequent joint statements and with the changes to the statute, the organization has assumed the character of an "International Association" and currently there are 21 gendarmeries and police forces with military status belonging to FIEP as members.
In the thirty-year history of the Association, before the assignment concluded with the meeting of these days, the Arma dei Carabinieri had assumed the presidency in 1999, in 2006 and in 2014 in correspondence with the bicentenary of the foundation of the Institution. Certainly positive experiences in the important field of international cooperation.
During today's summit, the recognition of the membership status of theMoldovan Carabinieri Inspectorate.
Their participation in the dynamics of the Association was supported by the Carabinieri in compliance with the strategic lines of national foreign policy direction.
