UNIFIL, the Italian blue helmets ensure control of the demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel

A few days after the renewal of the resolution of the United Nations Security Council which legitimizes its presence in Lebanon, the Italian Blue Helmets of the UNIFIL mission (United Nation Interim Force in Lebanon), continue unabated, to ensure control of their area of responsibility. In particular the military of the Joint Task Force Lebanon, on a brigade basis Aosta, have assumed command of the West Sector of the mission for about a month and to date they have already carried out over 7.000 monitoring activities of the demarcation line (Blue Line) and of the sector assigned by the mission, of which over 1.500 conducted by the Italian maneuvering component, contributing not only to the stability of the area, but above all to give impetus to the increase in the perception of security by the local population who, thanks to the over 750 patrols carried out in collaboration with the LAF (Lebanese Armed Forces), places full trust in their institutions and in the UNIFIL mission.

In addition to these activities, there are those of civil and military cooperation (CIMIC) for the planning and implementation of aid projects to the population, the needs of which emerge thanks to the daily meetings that the commanders at various levels hold with the representatives of the civil and religious authorities. of South Lebanon (Key Leader Engagement).

La Blue Line represents that practical line of demarcation, 120 kilometers long, 60 of which in the area of Joint Task Force Lebanon (JTF-L) - Sector West, which separates Lebanon from Israel and which, conventionally, allows the identification of accidental violations between the parties.

The Italian-led Maneuvering Task Force (Italbatt), based on the 5th Infantry Regiment Aosta of Messina with the squadron group of the regiment Aosta Lancers (6th) of Palermo, the logistic battalion of the logistic regiment Aosta, a company of the 4th sapper engineers regiment also from Palermo, together with specialized personnel of the 28th regiment Pavia of Pesaro, of Multinational Cimic Group of Motta di Livenza (PN) and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Serbia, ensures, on a daily basis, on the basis of resolution no. 1701 of 2006 of the United Nations, the monitoring of the cessation of hostilities, favoring the maintenance of stability in the area of ​​interest, in a context in which the balance is combined with the impartial and transparent work of peacekeepers of the Italian contingent. 

The Italian mission in Lebanon led by a mechanized brigade Aosta, in his third term in the Land of the Cedars with the colors of the United Nations, is responsible for the West Sector of UNIFIL in which 3.800 operate Blue Helmets of 16 of the 48 contributing countries to the UN mission and of which over 1.000 are members Blue Helmets Italians. In recent days, Moldova has joined the countries that contribute to the command staff.

Patrolling the section of the Blue Line which insists in the Italbatt area, together with the Ghanaian (Ghanbatt), Irish and Polish (Irishpolbatt) contribution in their respective areas under the Italian command, constitutes the backbone of the stability of the sector. 

The activities carried out in the Operative Theater are conducted under the coordination and according to the directives given by the operational command of interforce forces (COVI), led by the general of the army corps Francesco Paolo Figliuolo.

COVI is the staff body of the Chief of Defense Staff, responsible for planning, coordinating and directing military operations, national and multinational joint exercises and related activities.
