"Radio West: Kosovo 1999-2010"

27/03/14

On Tuesday at the University of Bari, the Department of Humanities, Languages, Arts, Italian Studies and Comparative Cultures held a seminar open to the public "Radio West: Kosovo 1999-2010".

The speakers: the journalist Lieta Zanatta and Arcangelo Moro, first director of Radio West, explained how important communication was in difficult areas, the contents, the schedules.

Luca Tundo, last director of Radio West, explained how much the Kosovars relied on it to find their loved ones.

The radio has facilitated humanitarian relief and the reconstruction of social and political relations. The words of a Kosovar lady, a former nurse who had moved to Italy thanks to her marriage to an Italian, provided direct testimony of what was being discussed.

Born with the contribution of Rai, Corriere della Sera and RTL 102.5, Radio West covered the 80% of the territory of Kosovo and was founded to facilitate contacts between the Italian military and the Kosovar population.

Arcangelo Moro has published the autobiographical book "Radio West: the voice of the Italian military in Kosovo" published by RAI ERI. During his work he interviewed several illustrious personalities, such as John Paul II live by telephone, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, then president of the Republic, and Kofi Annan, the then UN secretary general.

Radio West is not the first military radio, there are others in Afghanistan and let's not forget the first, the one of which almost no trace remains, Radio IBIS in Somalia.
