Operation Oryx: Thaon Di Revel deployed in Qatar

With the arrival of the ship today at the port of Doha Paolo Thaon of Revel, the first of seven units of the new class of Multipurpose Offshore Patrol (PPA) which the Navy fleet has recently equipped itself with, the deployment of the Italian interforce contingent, led by the Army, in charge of the operation "Orice ”, The bilateral support mission to the Qatar Armed Forces for the security of the World Cup scheduled from November 20 to December 18.

The ship will patrol international waters off the capital in order to prevent illicit trafficking and possible terrorist activities. As part of the articulated Qatari defense apparatus, the Thaon of Revel it will operate in full synergy with the air and naval assets of other countries such as the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Pakistan and Turkey.

The Navy will also contribute to the safety of the waters near the coast through the self-driving underwater vehicle "REMUS 100", useful for identifying the presence of dangerous objects on the seabed.

Il Thaon of Revel is a new concept ship designed and built entirely in Italy, which represents the state of the art of the national shipbuilding and defense industry.

Its innovative systems, such as Europe's first 3D fixed face radar, the new 76/62 overhead anti-aircraft artillery system, the naval cockpit (from which only two operators can conduct all platform systems, navigation and, in the at the same time, air and sea operations up to the deployment of weapons) and its modularity make it a flexible and effective tool for a wide range of missions, from patrols to support for the civilian population.

On board the patrol vessel is an SH-90A, a multi-role helicopter for anti-ship and anti-submarine missions, also suitable for search and rescue (SAR) and logistical transport operations.

To seal the close friendship between the two countries, a delegation of the executive committee of the Ministry of Defense for the 2022 FIFA World Cup greeted the arrival of the Italian sailors with the delivery of a special welcome gift containing a touch of culture local, the traditional winter “shal”, which is also the mascot of the FIFA World Cup. The Italian contingent includes about 560 soldiers from the Armed Forces and the Carabinieri.
