29/11/14

During the stop in Dar es Salaam of Doria Ship, the seventh for the destroyer engaged in the Atalanta mission in the waters of the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin from the 6 last August, the crew conducted a Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC ).

The activity falls within the scope of an Italian Defense program for national structures operating in missions abroad.

After the activities conducted in the 2014 by Zeffiro ship and Mimbelli ship, it is Doria ship to continue projects in the area of the Somali basin, the Horn of Africa and the Mozambique Channel.

The project aims to improve relations with the local population, through support and support activities supported together with governmental and non-governmental organizations, with agencies working in the field of development and humanitarian assistance. Nave Doria, thanks to the assistance of the Italian embassy, has planned all the activity before the arrival in port, in order to optimize the intervention times during a stop that has been characterized by a busy program of activities .

The first project consisted of bringing materials, supplies, and help to the nursery school in Vingunguti, located on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, in a very poor area, built along the banks of a huge open-air landfill.

The school provides hospitality, education and a better life outlook to around 250 Tanzanian children from 2 to 6 years who would otherwise be condemned to living on the streets. The school is also being expanded to guarantee the first year of elementary school.

The ship crew Doria has enthusiastically joined the idea of supporting the project and many have placed their technical and professional skills, sacrificing the little free time available, to help solve problems of maintenance, repairs and interventions necessary to guarantee the operation of the structure.

One morning was dedicated to the transport and delivery of materials purchased: the volunteers of Doria ship, despite the tropical temperature and humidity, very quickly managed to complete the transport in the dedicated rooms that the Sisters of Cottolengo who run the school , they had prepared.

The military, of all roles and degrees, surrounded by the enthusiasm of children, have replaced mirrors, shelves, pipes, handles and doors and have restored the functionality of two boilers. The school, currently undergoing renovation, is a reality that gives the local population a chance for education and education that otherwise could not be accessed.

Another day was dedicated to the young guests of the school, for whom a magic show was organized. The time spent with them has allowed the sailors of Doria to spend a few hours with the children and with the school staff and receive from them in exchange a testimony of instinctive and contagious joy.

The second project supported under the CIMIC initiative consisted in procuring materials and medicines for a dispensary located in the locality of Kawe, where the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception of Ivrea and some Italian volunteer doctors work, to assist patients with AIDS and where newborns of less well-off local families are treated.

Military support to civilian actors and their environment is a prerogative for the achievement of the military mission and pursuing this conviction the activity of Civil-Military Cooperation of Nave Doria, flagship of the Atalanta mission, has positively contributed to improving relations with a party of the population of Tanzania where there have been numerous and, probably in the future, will be the stops of military units engaged in activities to combat piracy.
