Monastery of Decani: change of guard between Italians and Slovenes

25/07/14

Deliveries took place yesterday for the vigilance service to the Orthodox monastery of Visoki Decani (Kosovo) between the Italian soldiers and their Slovenian colleagues, all working under the Multinational Battle Group West (MNBG W), commanded by Colonel Angelo Minelli .

The Italian contingent, after a period of support, implemented the "Reshaping" process, started on the basis of the instructions of the KFOR commander, general Salvatore Farina.

According to this program, the supervision of the site, managed so far by the Italian contingent on a permanent basis, will be entrusted in rotation to the rates of foreign armies that make up the Multinational Battle Group West: Slovenes, Austrians, Moldavians, and of course the Italians.

This will give greater dynamism to the security service of the religious site.

After 15 years of uninterrupted vigilance on the part of the Italians, the Decani Monastery will then be monitored by equally valid colleagues from other nations.

"This is an important step", underlined Colonel Angelo Minelli: "the reshaping will allow, at the right moment, the transfer of site security responsibility to local police forces and civil authorities, as happened in September 2013 for the Patriarchate of Pec ”.

Since June 1999, the Italian contingent has assumed responsibility for the Metochia region, the "Land of Monasteries", the cradle of Orthodox cultural and religious heritage, where numerous Serbian enclaves gravitate, in an area with an Albanian majority.

This makes it one of the most delicate areas of Kosovo.
