EU Mission in Central Africa: Italian engineers reclaim a water channel

27/11/14

The Italian engineers of the European Union mission in the Central African Republic EUFOR RCA have completed the reclamation of a section of the water network of the capital Bangui, indirectly contributing to the prevention of malaria within densely populated neighborhoods.

In two weeks of work, the engineers of the 8 ° regiment of the 'Folgore' brigade parachutists removed more than a thousand cubic meters of debris by means of tracked excavators, piled up by a bridge that separates two sensitive areas of the city, which were theater of violent inter-confessional clashes. For the Italian military it was the second phase of reclamation of the same channel, following that of last September.

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration in the context of a town rehabilitation and reconciliation project, which sees hundreds of young people from the various districts of the capital employed in a public works program remunerated by the European Union.

Also within the same project, the EUFOR European Union bombers held - in favor of the young people participating in the program - a series of preventive lessons on the danger of unexploded ordnance, whose finding is frequent during the course of reclamation work 'water.
