At the end of a brief ceremony the UN blue helmets are now responsible for the security device of the airport of the Central African capital, previously assigned to the soldiers of the European Union mission.

The airport of "M'Poko" represents one of the Bangui areas originally entrusted to the EUFOR RCA mission, which has been working since last June to help stabilize the African country, favor the work of international organizations and facilitate the deployment of MINUSCA , the multidimensional mission of the United Nations started last September.

The airport, in addition to being the only international terminal in Central Africa and an essential stop for humanitarian workers is one of the sensitive areas of the city for the presence of thousands of displaced, whose number is gradually decreasing thanks to international efforts.

An important contribution to airport area security management was provided by the Italian engineers of the 8 ° regiment of the Folgore brigade framed in EUFOR RCA, who improved the road system, built the vehicle control areas, checked over 800 vehicles per day - and reinforced checkpoints to protect the airport.

The transfer of M'Poko airport - which was attended by the commander of the EU mission and his counterpart of the UN, in addition to the highest Central African authorities, represents the first phase of the transition between EUFOR RCA and MINUSCA, destined to end in March of the 2015.
