Mare Nostrum: arrested smugglers departed from Egypt

The action against the human traffickers led to the arrest of 9 smugglers, all of Egyptian origin, at the end of the rescue operations carried out by the Grecale frigate and the Foscari patrol boat, last 19 May.

Once the migrants have been transhipped and secured, the on-board personnel started investigations by the judicial police, immediately activating a connection, and coordinating with the Syracuse prosecutor's office, which was territorially competent for the event occurred, and reporting the case to the district anti-mafia prosecutor's office of Catania for the alleged crime of conspiracy aimed at illegal immigration.

Upon arrival in Augusta, yesterday morning, the alleged smugglers were reported to the agents of the Syracuse public prosecutor's office, in particular the agents of the inter-force group for the fight against illegal immigration, who validated their detention and transfer to the local house circondariale.

The boats on which the migrants were found, taken over and towed by the navy ships, were made available to the competent prosecutor's office of Syracuse as evidence relating to the crime of aiding and abetting illegal immigration.

Since the start of the Mare Nostrum operation, the 13 October 2013, the smugglers brought to justice have been in total over 200, of which 151 directly from the navy personnel.

44.073 are the migrants brought to safety.
