Mare Nostrum: 1396 migrants rescued in the last few hours

1396 are migrants arriving on boats overcrowded from the coasts of North Africa rescued by navy ships, port authorities and civilian boats between last night and tonight in the Strait of Sicily.

The frigate Scirocco of the navy rescued a boat carrying 530 migrants in the absence of individual life jackets; among them 47 are minor women and 137.

An Atlantic aircraft of the 41st flock of the Air Force that took off yesterday morning from Sigonella, as part of the Mare Nostrum operation, sighted and reported to the operations center of the command in chief of the naval team (CINCNAV) of the navy a boat with on board a large number of migrants to whom naval means of the Mare Nostrum operation device were directed.

The ship of the harbor authorities of Porto Dattilo last night rescued a boat south of Lampedusa recovering 355 migrants; later he also embarked on 92 refugees from the motor vessel Leonard Tide who had rescued them previously from a dinghy in difficulty.

This morning ship Dattilo has completed a further rescue to a boat by recovering other 239 migrants. The ship of the harbor authorities with 686 migrants on board is waiting for the interior ministry to communicate the port where they will be landed.

The motorship Bonita (Greece) yesterday embarked on 180 migrants from a boat in the Strait of Sicily south of Lampedusa.
