Lebanon: the Italian helicopter task force carries out emergency medical evacuation

The Task Force Italair, was called in the past few hours to intervene urgently to carry out a medical evacuation mission, in favor of a Blue Helmet of non-Italian nationality, which was in particularly critical conditions.

The patient, after being stabilized and boarded on an AB-212 helicopter in CASEVAC (CASualty EVAcuation) configuration byAir Medical Evacuation Team which works together with the staff of Italair, was transported to the Saint George hospital in Beirut, where he underwent a delicate emergency neurological intervention.

Thanks to the operational readiness of the crews and ground support personnel of the 58th Task Group Italair, it was possible to provide the necessary specialist care.

Emergency medical evacuation is one of the main tasks carried out by the Task Force in Southern Lebanon. Every day of the year, 24 hours a day, the CASEVAC structure of the Task Force is ready to take off within 24 minutes of the alert, in order to guarantee the protection of human life in favor of civil and military personnel in the area of ​​operation.

The Task Force Italair, commanded by Colonel Fabrizio Barone, is a joint flight unit that currently employs AB-212 helicopters of the Italian Army Aviation, based on the 2nd AVES "Sirio" regiment based in Lamezia Terme, and flight and military crews of support belonging mainly to the Italian Army, with the collaboration of the Navy and the Air Force, guaranteeing seamless air support to the UNIFIL mission, with reconnaissance and observation missions throughout the area of ​​operation, in particular along there Blue Line, the dividing line between Israel and Lebanon, in compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 of 2006. Established on 3 July 1979, it represents the longest-running operational unit of the Italian Armed Forces in the context of international missions in which our country has participated.

Currently, the Italian mission in Lebanon led by the "Aosta" brigade, in its third mandate in the Land of the Cedars with the colors of the United Nations, under brigadier general command Giuseppe Bertoncello, is in charge of West Sector UNIFIL in which 3.800 UN peacekeepers operate from 16 of the 48 contributing countries to the UN mission and of which over 1.000 Italian UN peacekeepers are members.

The activities carried out in the Operative Theater are conducted under the coordination and according to the directives given by the Interoperable Summit Operations Command (COVI), led by the general of the army corps Francesco Paolo Figliuolo. COVI is the staff body of the Chief of Defense Staff, responsible for planning, coordinating and directing military operations, national and multinational joint exercises and related activities.
