Lebanon: the commander of UNIFIL visits the West Sector

One month after his appointment as head of the mission and force commander of UNIFIL, the Spanish major general Aroldo Lazaro, today for the first time visited the "Millevoi" base, the headquarters of the Sector West and the Italian contingent in Lebanon.

The commander of UNIFIL was welcomed by Brigadier General Massimiliano Stecca, commander of the West Sector, who explained to General Lazaro, in a briefing all the activities in progress, updating him on the operational and logistic situation of the Italian-led sector.

During the salute to the Blue Helmets of Sector West, the commander of UNIFIL wished to express his satisfaction and thanks for the work carried out with particular reference to the implementation of Resolution 1701 of the United Nations Security Council.

General Lazaro took over from Major General Stefano Del Col last February, after more than three and a half years in office.

Also for the Spanish general officer it is a return to Lebanon after having participated in previous missions in 2011, 2013 and commanded the Sector East of UNIFIL in 2016.

The Italian mission in Lebanon is currently led by the "Pozzuolo del Friuli" cavalry brigade, in its sixth term in the "Land of the Cedars" with the colors of the United Nations, and is responsible for West Sector of UNIFIL in which 3800 UN peacekeepers operate from 16 of the 46 contributing countries to the UN mission and of which about 1.000 Italian soldiers are part of.

The Italian Blue Helmets operate in Lebanon with impartiality and transparency, close to the Blue Line (blue line), demarcation line with Israel, to ensure stability in the area for over 15 years, monitoring the cessation of hostilities, assisting and supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and providing support to the local population also through numerous CIMIC projects .
