In recent days, three high-precision specialist instruments, essential for accurate observation and inspection of the eyeballs, were donated by the Italian contingent in Lebanon to the Tura clinic, a town of about five thousand inhabitants a few kilometers from Tire.

The instrumentation will allow the ophthalmologists of the health facility to carry out in-depth diagnostic ophthalmological examinations, identifying any pathologies early even in hospitalized patients, not least the coronavirus viral conjunctivitis, an early symptom of the disease, difficult to identify compared to the common and very widespread conjunctivitis. "The eyes and in particular the conjunctiva", explains Lieutenant Colonel Lucius Occhiolini, doctor of the Italian contingent, “they can be a gateway for the Coronavirus which is then dragged through the ways of outflow of tears inside the nose and throat. Very often this manifestation represents the first sign of an infection and therefore must be recognized early ”.

The delivery of the instrumentation, organized in compliance with the health safety measures for the Coronavirus emergency, took place in the presence of the commander of the Italian contingent of UNIFIL, general of the Army Andrea Di Stasio, the mayor of Tura Mohammed Haider and the mayor of Tire Hassan Mohammed Nabouq, in the role of president of the Union of Municipalities of Tire.

"Italy has experienced the pain of the loss of many human lives and fully experienced the gravity of the situation", said General Di Stasio, “This is why the idea of the donation was immediate, from the very first moments of my command, after an open dialogue with the main government authorities in the area. During this unprecedented health emergency for Lebanon, which is also facing a very serious economic and political crisis, the response to our Lebanese brothers was unanimous and strong and the Italian contingent did its part, taking immediate action. to understand how to make your contribution ".

The two important local exponents thanked the Italian "blue helmets" and underlined the importance of the donation towards the local municipality, "Indispensable to affirm the population's primary right of access to specialized quality assistance in ophthalmological care to be provided to patients".

Assistance to the Lebanese population, together with monitoring the cessation of hostilities and supporting the local Armed Forces, is one of the main tasks assigned to the Italian contingent of UNIFIL in compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
