A portable ultrasound system was donated to the Red Cross of Tire by the soldiers of the Italian contingent operating as part of the Unifil mission, the United Nations interposition force in South Lebanon.

The device will allow doctors on the front line in the fight against Coronavirus to carry out diagnostic tests directly at home on the patient, avoiding possible infections from transport to hospital. The ultrasound is also useful for carrying out the ecoFAST (acronym for Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma), method used in emergency medicine, which consists of a screening performed on the bedridden patient through the use of ultrasound to search for blood that collects around the heart (cardiac tamponade) or abdominal organs (hemoperitoneum) after an injury physical.

The delivery of the ultrasound, to which is also added an important donation of pediatric drugs, was made by the regiment "Lancieri di Montebello" (8th) in the presence of the president of the Red Cross of Tire Mouzaiyan Siklawy Ajami who expressed feelings of gratitude to the Italian "blue helmets" for the gesture of high social value towards the local community.

Assistance to the Lebanese population, together with monitoring the cessation of hostilities and supporting local armed forces, is one of the main tasks assigned to the Italian contingent of Unifil in compliance with UN Security Council resolution 1701.
